Bangladesh Out of I20 2009
Ireland 138-4 (N O'Brien 40, K O'Brien 39no) beat
Bangladesh 137-8 (Mortaza 33no, Johnston 3-21) by six wickets
Find the lastest upset of the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 was produced at Trent Bridge where Ireland delivered a polished performance to beat Bangladesh by six wickets, a result which confirmed the early departure of Bangladesh and put Ireland and India into the Super Eights.
Batting first, Bangladesh made their usual fast start, but lost too many wickets and eventually closed on 137 for seven, owing much of that to Mashrafe Mortaza's unbeaten 33 in 16 balls as 20 runs were leaked from the final over. Ireland lost Jeremy Bray early but constructed their innings with much more responsibility, O'Brien brothers Niall (40) and Kevin (39 not out) scoring the key runs.
Kevin thumped the winning hit over cover to seal the win with ten balls to go while Niall's runs came from 25 balls as he effortlessly scored three sixes. He was hampered by an ankle injury picked up while fielding, but that allowed him to hit freely and he did so beautifully.
William Porterfield kept things together at the top of the order with 23 in 29 balls but there was a wobble on when he, Niall O'Brien and Gary Wilson (10) departed after some superb spin bowling had put the pressure on.
Kevin O'Brien relieved it with more big hitting, four fours and two sixes bringing the game home for the Irish.
Earlier, Mortaza's late blast rescued Bangladesh after Trent Johnston took three for 21 bowling his four overs straight from the start to reduce Bangladesh to 50 for three in the eighth over.
Tamim Iqbal played nicely for 22 before he was run out, the ball bouncing off Kyle McCallan's chest onto the stumps to give an early indication that this was Ireland's day.
The next best effort after Ashraful and Mortaza was 14, registered by captain Mohammad Ashraful and Mushfiqu Rahim.
Boyd Rankin, Regan West, Alex Cusack and McCallan took a wicket apiece.
